Summary of the book "Murder on the Stairs. The Last Years of Stepan Bandera"
1957. East Germany is under Soviet control. KGB agent Stashinsky comes to the department for instructions, but receives a weapon he has never seen before. Meanwhile, Munich journalist Stefan Popel, an emigrant from Lviv, picks up his eldest daughter from school. She is interested in recent history and asks her father about what happened in Ukraine during World War II, why he himself often signs himself with different surnames, and whether he has ever heard of Stepan Bandera, the regional leader of the OUN in the 1930s. When talking about Ukraine, Stefan Popel does not only clarify that he is the same Bandera whom the KGB has long been hunting. Bandera does not listen to the warnings, refuses the guards, and relies on his own revolver. He dies on the stairs, turning to face the killer.
More about the book
The painting “Murder on the Stairs. The Last Years of Stepan Bandera” is a graphic novel by Ukrainian writer and reporter Vera Kuryko and artist Lada Kasyanenko. 1954, Stefan Popel picks up his eldest daughter Natalia from school. The teenager is fascinated by history and is researching the biography of Stepan Bandera. She had recently read an article about the Ukrainian politician, but wanted to learn more about him.
Popel works as a journalist in Munich, and he must know about the events of World War II. Natalia tries to question her husband: she is interested in whether her father knows the revolutionary. Stefan does not tell his daughter that he is Bandera.
Ukrainian painting about a nationalist ideologue
Stefan Popel is an emigrant from Lviv, he often changes his last name, and does not stay at one address for long. The man works as a journalist in Munich. This place was relatively safe, since the OUN opened an office there in 1951. In Germany, Popel writes texts for the newspaper "Shlyakh Peremohy" and hides from the KGB.
The journalist's family does not know his real name. The man's children do not understand why his father is so mysterious, but Natalia, Stefan's eldest daughter, began to suspect something. She shared with her father the information she read in the article: in 1933, Bandera headed the regional executive of the OUN. At that time, he was in Ukraine and was devising a plan to avenge the lives taken during the Holodomor. A year later, the man was arrested, and later sentenced to death... The girl told about the Ukrainian revolutionary, and Stefan Popel only deepened the information with detailed facts.
The story of the most famous Ukrainian politician
The comic book “Murder on the Stairs. The Last Years of Stepan Bandera” is a historical fiction about the life of a revolutionary-nationalist in exile and the terrible, insidious murder of Stepan Bandera. Vera Kuriko created the script with the help of a scientific consultant, historian and publicist Volodymyr Vʼiatrovych. The information in the picture book is presented in a structured manner, but the dynamics are traced: the events are not reproduced in chronological order. The pages are marked with time, which allows us to imagine a holistic picture of the last years of the life of the Ukrainian revolutionary. Lada Kasyanenko’s detailed illustrations are key elements of the story, they complement the text and create a feeling of immersion in the past.
We recommend purchasing "Murder on the Stairs. The Last Years of Stepan Bandera" to enrich your personal library with a unique comic book and learn more about the life of a political figure outside his native country.
