The Soviet Union invaded in 1940, Nazi Germany a year later, expelling the Red Army, and in 1945 Soviet forces returned, sealing Latvia off from the rest of the world until 1991. All three occupations involved terror, arrests, and brutal murders of its citizens. Thousands were deported to the far corners of the Soviet Union, to Siberia. The land and people of Latvia were devastated. And all this happened just 20 years after Latvia declared independence, which brought hope and growth.
Can someone whose home has been destroyed, whose legs are not designed for a long journey, whose mouth does not make a sound, and whose only shining eyes shine, be saved? No?
