And what is not there is in Yanovsky's sketches and in an early version of the novel. For the first time, "The Shipmaster" is published without censorship cuts and with unknown fragments.
Why is it worth reading?
- Surprisingly, "The Shipmaster" is Yanovsky's first major prose work, based on his own experience working at the Odessa Film Factory. Perhaps this is what makes the novel so multi-layered: on the surface it is like a bright kaleidoscope of images and characters, but at the same time it is filled with deep reflections on the values and meanings of human life. In addition, many of its characters are based on real people, so the reader can have a lot of fun guessing who is who.
- Yanovsky's debut was powerful and brought new methods to the literary process of that time. At least one feature - working a lot with scripts, the author decided to apply the principles of cinema in his text. So the reader of this novel has the opportunity to check how such a symbiosis of the arts "works".
