The hospital in a provincial town has been waiting for changes for a long time. Kent O'Donnell, the newly appointed head of the surgical department, is ready for them. Fresh discoveries in medicine, advanced research, modern approaches to treatment - these are the principles on which, in his opinion, the work of the institution should be based.

But not all colleagues support his ideas. The biggest opponent of the reforms is pathologist Joe Pearson. He is used to trusting only himself. Dr. Pearson has considerable experience, authority, and most importantly, connections. He is able to make life difficult for the new leader.
