About the author
Taras Shevchenko is undoubtedly the most prominent figure in the history of Ukrainian culture. The poet was born on March 9, 1814 in the village of Moryntsy, Kyiv province, into a serf family. Taras's grandfathers and great-grandfathers were Cossacks and took an active part in the liberation wars. Grandfather Ivan had a special influence on the future author of "Kobzar". At one time, he participated in the Koliiv region and told his grandson many details about this uprising.
Shevchenko's poem was illustrated by Mykola Tolmachov. He was born in Kyiv in 1993. Mykola studied at the National School of Fine Arts (ENSBA) in Paris and participated in several exhibitions with the Da-End gallery.
Translator John Weir (real name - Vyv'yursky Ivan Fedorovych; October 23, 1906 - November 23, 1983) - journalist, writer, figure of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. Born in the city of Broad Valley (Canada) in the family of a lumberjack, an emigrant from Ukraine. Participated in the labor movement. From 1927 - a member of the Communist Party of Canada, later - a member of its Central Committee, editor of its printed organs - "The Worker" ("Robitnyk", from 1935), "Canadian Tribune" ("Canadian Tribune", 1943-46), as well as the emigration periodicals "Ukrainian Canadian" ("Ukrainian Canadian", 1947-54), "Ukrainian Life" (member of the editorial board, 1954-58). From 1974 - correspondent of the newspaper "Canadian Tribune" in Moscow; translator in publishing houses in Moscow and Kyiv; author of short stories, poems, translator into English of works by T. Shevchenko, I. Frank, and other classics of Ukrainian literature. Died in Western Hospital (Canada).
