Expansion. Book 2. Caliban's War: a novel by James S. A. Corey
Caliban's War is the second novel in the Expanse series by American science fiction writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank, who have dropped the pseudonym James S. A. Corey. In terms of genre, this work, like the entire series, is a fairly harmonious combination of "hard" science fiction, space opera, horror, political detective, and action.
A year has passed since the "incident" on Eros, when an asteroid was engulfed by a hostile protomolecule capable of changing the structure of all living organisms. This infection threatened the entire Solar System, but the now distorted Eros was successfully directed to Venus. There, under a thick layer of atmosphere, the protomolecule grows and waits.
Meanwhile, a monster infected with it suddenly appears on Ganymede, the breadbasket of all the outer planets. However, its attack is enough to ignite a dormant conflict between Mars and Earth. As a result, Ganymede is nearly destroyed, the fragile stability of the system is threatened, and the protomolecule seems to be returning.
We watch the rescue of humanity from the perspective of the same idealist, Captain Jim Golden; Chrisjen Avasarala, the only one in the UN Office who has not lost her sanity; renegade Sergeant Bobbi Draper of the Martian Space Marines; and scientist Prax Meng, who is simply looking for his daughter, who was lost during the conflict.
