- The reprint of the fundamental two-volume work by Vadym (1876–1957) and Danylo (1877–1927) Shcherbakivskyi, “Ukrainian Art” (1913, 1926), is being carried out with the elimination of inaccuracies in the primary sources. For a significant part of the photographs in the second volume, the originals have been found and are stored in the D. M. Shcherbakivskyi Fund in the Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archaeology of the NAS of Ukraine. In order to provide a more complete picture of the achievements of Vadym and Danylo Shcherbakivskyi in the field of the history of Ukrainian architecture, their main works on the specified topic have been added to the two-volume work, as well as reviews of the two-volume work by Shcherbakivskyi’s contemporaries.
- The book opens with a preface by the candidate of historical sciences, Ms. Iryna Khodak. The publication includes more than 400 unique photographs illustrating more than 100 monuments of Ukrainian wooden architecture (churches, chapels, bell towers), carvings, church and tombstone crosses of Galicia, Bukovina, Bessarabia, Poltava region), most of which no longer exist. The large appendix contains more than 20 articles by Vadym and Danylo Shcherbakivskyi, devoted mainly to Ukrainian church architecture. These are fundamental articles devoted to the monuments of Volhynia, Podillia, Galicia, Poltava region and Kyiv region; an outstanding monument of Ukrainian iconography - the Sorochyn iconostasis. Vadym Shcherbakivskyi's article devoted to the illusory effect of the reduction of the internal height of Ukrainian churches is admirable.
- The text in the two-volume book is presented in Ukrainian and French, as the Shcherbakivsky brothers intended the two-volume book to be one of the first presentations of Ukrainian folk art and architecture in Europe. Particular attention is paid to woodcarving from the Poltava region: details of sledges, chests, carts, honey pots, etc. The outstanding Ukrainian artist, architect and designer Vasyl Krychevsky, who designed the covers for both volumes, took part in the design of the original edition.
-
A reference system has been developed for the entire publication: a bibliography, nominal and subject-geographical indexes (compiled by Mr. Vasyl Slobodyan), which also contains annotations to monuments of architecture and art. - The book is devoted to Ukrainian art and contains unique photographs of Ukrainian wooden architecture (churches, bell towers, chapels) of the 1900s and 1920s. Among the illustrations: folk wood carving, capital crosses; Sorochinsky iconostasis, church architecture of Galicia, Volhynia, Kyiv region, Poltava region. In addition to the two-volume book "Ukrainian Art" (1913, 1926), the book is supplemented with articles by the Shcherbakovsky brothers devoted to Ukrainian architecture and art. The book contains name and subject-geographic indexes that simplify work with the book.
