The Book of Martians on Khreshchatyk. Literary Kyiv of the Early 20th Century by Vira Ageeva
Walking around Kyiv, it is easy to recognize numerous locations described in poems and novels of the early 20th century. Somewhere the apartment numbers have changed, the facades have been repainted, sometimes the street names have changed, but if you look closely, you can imagine how Tychyna and Kurbas sat at the same table in the "Cellar of Arts" on Gorodetsky Street, a little further away, in Pidmogylny's office, almost the entire artistic Kyiv gathered, and in the basement of the Continental Hotel irreconcilable aspanfoots, symbolists and spiralists met for coffee. Real "Martians" walked along evening Khreshchatyk, and in Georgievsky Lane the mysterious artistic theosophical nine sought new horizons.
Vira Ageeva's new book is a journey through the literary Kyiv of the early 20th century. The author will show Kyiv through the eyes of avant-garde artists, rebellious emancipators, bohemian poets, Kyiv in which they lived and created, despite everything that was happening around them, Kyiv that stood firm, preserving its history and future.
