The novel "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque was first published in 1929. It quickly gained worldwide recognition. The writer was at the front during World War I and knows firsthand about all the horrors described in the novel.
This is the story of Paul Boemer and his comrades, whose lives were taken away and sent to the trenches. For many years, their job became to kill. One of the discoveries of the hero of the book: I always thought that everyone was against war, until I learned that there were those who were for it, especially those who did not have to go to it.
Remarque describes the events so eloquently that the reader feels the shrapnel whistling and shells bursting, hears the groans of dying soldiers. The author tells about the life of a soldier at the front and at home, his thoughts, fears and feelings. Tragic scenes alternate with funny situations and this gives a realistic picture of the life of soldiers in wartime.
The reader learns what these young people felt at that time. He finds himself standing at the bedside of a dying friend, thinking about the wonderful English shoes that would be lost when the friend was gone.
This book is about boys who never became men. They fell out of normal life. And after the blood, horror, injustice and senselessness of what they saw, these young people are unlikely to be able to return to normal life. The war has disfigured them both physically and morally. This is clearly visible in the novel.
