Volodymyr Vynnychenko (1880‒1951) was a prominent Ukrainian prose writer and playwright of the early 20th century, who made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian literature and politics of his time. He initiated the neorealist movement in Ukrainian literature and is known as one of the most influential political figures of the era. For many years he lived and worked in exile.
One of Vynnychenko's outstanding works is the science fiction novel "The Solar Machine". The action in the novel takes place at the beginning of the 20th century in Berlin. The main character, Rudolf Stor, creates a fantastic invention - a "solar machine", which allows you to grow food using solar energy. This invention surpasses traditional methods of providing food and becomes a real liberation for humanity. To grow "solar bread", you simply had to put grass or leaves under sunlight, and then water them with sweat.
This science fiction invention radically changes the perception of the world and causes a social movement for the "solar machine". People's ordinary lives undergo radical changes, and they begin to fight for the right to use this invention.
