They live in an ordinary Kiev apartment block with flowerbeds in front of the entrances and narrow balconies, from which it is so pleasant on summer evenings to listen to the city and watch the night fall on it. They are Lesya and Oleksa, as well as their teenage daughter Taya and their dog Dina. Their life also seems ordinary, even banal, until an excessive passion bursts into it like a whirlwind, threatening to destroy and bury everything under itself - established habits, feelings for each other, and even their ideas about themselves...
Immersing the reader in a narrative that at first seems ordinary, the story told by Sofiya Andrukhovych twists like a spring with each new paragraph, gaining tension, and after a few dozen pages, it rushes at the reader in an unstoppable avalanche that barely allows us to catch our breath. And this literary avalanche is so masterful, so sophisticated, and beautiful that we can only enjoy it in amazement.
A FLOWER IN THE BASEMENT OF A HIGH-RISE BUILDING OR A WORLD FULL OF METAPHOR
This novel is about human relationships, love and irritation, about trauma and a war that is no longer there, but people remain, in whose souls and minds raging and often destructive passions. The author has aptly chosen the name for everything that happens in the story. Catananhe is an ordinary garden flower with delicate blue petals, which in the Middle Ages was used to prepare a love potion. It is an allusion to the illogical and unpredictable actions of the characters, as if they were under the influence of such a drink.

Sofia Andrukhovych is a Ukrainian writer, translator from English and Polish, and author of eight books of fiction. She has received several prestigious awards and prizes, including: BBC Book of the Year 2014 for her novel Felix Austria, and the Sholem Aleichem Prize 2023 for her novel Amadoka.
