After surviving the Vietnam War, Ernst Allbright returns home a different person. You never know what mood he'll be in. After losing his job again, Ernst drops everything and moves his family north to Alaska to live freely in a truly wild part of America.
Thirteen-year-old Leni is trapped in her parents' turbulent relationship. She hopes to start a new life by moving to a new state. Her mother, Cora, will do anything for the man she loves, even go the distance—even into obscurity.
At first, the Allbrights feel like Alaska was a gift from God. Moving to a wild, remote corner of the state, Ernst, Cora, and Leni find new friends—strong men and even stronger women who value independence above all else. The Allbrights quickly adjust to their new life.
However, in the winter, Alaska is plunged into darkness... Ernt's psyche cannot stand it, and the family begins to have problems again. In a small, snow-covered house, under the cover of the northern night, mother and daughter realize the terrible truth: no one will help them. Only they themselves can save themselves in this wilderness...
